In some simple hallways the framerate shoots up and it's so smooth and wonderful, but it doesn't last. It runs kinda like Perfect Dark and most other complex N64 games.

The frame rate looks like 10-40 fps with an average of 20 I'd say. I'm still working through the single player. I'm sure I'll never touch the multiplayer mode but yeah I have heard it was fun in its day. lol I also have not been able to find a God mode cheat.sigh. Gotta let my brain absorb these situations for a few days. I'd have beaten the game by now but I tend to get stuck on the missions occasionally. It's not exciting like a metal soundtrack, but it's certainly moody and atmospheric. It's of course has the same ambient background noises as Doom64 and Quake. They should have at least made your departure and arrival at the various major mission locations more rewarding. Essentially you only have the progress diagram before each mission. There's also very little intro telling you what you are doing in general. There is almost nothing connecting the story together. There's actually a map in a mine that starts off with a ice/rock floor with broken bilinear filtering. In-game terminal graphics are all blurry regardless for example. I suppose without mip mapping they might be able to use higher resolution textures too (it uses less texture cache space) but that's hard to judge. But the lack of mip mapping means a lot of moire patterns and texture swimming in the distance. The 3D visuals lack mip mapping and anti-aliasing, probably to squeeze a little more frame rate out of it. It uses the expansion pak but I'm not sure what benefit it brings. It's probably running 320x240 at 16-bit color depth. But it is N64 so yeah.Īctually on the topic of the graphics, they are interesting. I get a kick out of how the rapid fire guns like the minigun, machine gun and hyperblaster don't really animate smoothly. Framerate still isn't very good most of the time. The original campaign here has some pretty simple maps.

So I'm thinking the unique campaign was just a smooth way to put the fact that they couldn't really use the PC campaign. The much ballyhooed original campaign still has some PC maps in it, though they quite simplified. And of course there are no checkpoints or quicksaves. Then you can carefully deal with enemies one at a time. Often the only way to make progress is to memorize enemy locations by replaying the map many times. Circle strafing is almost impossible, at least for me. It's very difficult to quickly target with the N64 controls and I don't think it has auto-aim. The main issue is it doesn't play very enjoyably. Does anyone else think this game vaguely sucks? RTX vs GTX in Quake II RTX highlights what RT cores are meant do in terms of performance and efficiency as they do get a chance to shine here.I'm about 2/3 through the game. Quake II RTX is not a hybrid solution like Battlefield V, Metro Exodus or Shadow of Tomb Raider, this is running fully path traced. Running even 40 FPS at 3840x1600 resolution on a (albeit expensive) consumer GPU is a big deal. Real-time ray-tracing was pretty much out of reach until recently. While whine about performance is fun it is missing the point. It honestly looks more impressive than it has any right to. While it is still low-poly and despite the model/texture upgrades done looks somewhat dated, it works well as a showcase for ray-tracing - dynamic lights, AO, shadows, reflections, refractions. Quakes, thanks to their open source, are a welcome testing ground for various things and for this one Nvidia took someones project to implement Vulkan and path tracing into Quake II - for a thesis on filtering techniques, I believe - and ran with it. This is not meant to be an AAA game, it is a techdemo. If you wish to watch the official game trailer, you can do it here:
